Before Lance Armstrong dominated cycling, another American was known as the best in the world. Greg LeMond captured two Road Race World Championships, and won three Tour De France titles. LeMond went through hell following his 1986 Tour De France victory. After an injury caused him to miss the 1987 race, LeMond almost lost his life a short time later. While turkey hunting, LeMond’s brother-in-law accidentally shot him in the back. With 35 shotgun pellets still in his body, LeMond returned to form and would go on to win back-to-back Tour De France titles in 1989-90.
