Hilary auditioned against hundreds of actors before winning the role as Brandon Teena — the real-life individual who was born a woman — though lived life as a man. Hilary, like Teena, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. The performance took the world by storm. Swank won the Oscar for Best Actress, as well as the Golden Globe for Best Actress that year. In the process, she beat out the likes of veteran actors Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Meryl Streep.
